
For the first time in seven years, the West Coast Regional Softball Championship has a new champion.
After having already knocked out six-time defending champ MCAS Miramar, Camp Pendleton’s 1st Marine Logistics Group finished the job Aug. 19 with a 12-2 victory over MCAS Yuma in the tournament’s finale at the Launch Pad.
“I knew we could do it,” MLG’s coach Jerry Perez said after his third-seeded squad put the finishing touches on what many figured to be an unlikely run to the title. “After the guys started scoring runs and getting hits, they knew they could do it, too. ... I said at the beginning of the tournament, Miramar can be beaten and the tournament (was) up for grabs.
