Motorcyclists sharpen skills at safety course

MARINE CORPS AIR STATION MIRAMAR, Calif.  — Whether riding for 10 years or getting on a motorcycle for the first time, formal training is essential for Marines to perfect their riding skills.

Marines gathered in a parking lot outside of the East Gate of the air station for a three-day Motorcycle Safety Foundation Basic Rider Course May 5 through 7.

“The course teaches and tests motor skills for motorcyclists who are just beginning and for those who have experience,” said James Greer, a Basic Rider Course instructor here.

On the first day of the course, students spent time learning about gear, safety, different parts of a motorcycle, types of motorcycles and riding situations. They also took a written exam to evaluate what they learned.

The students then moved out of the classroom and onto the motorcycles for the second and third days of the course to apply what they learned.

“They practice shifting, maneuvering and control, weaving, riding into a turn and quick stopping,” explained Greer.

Although the course covered basic riding techniques, the more experienced riders found that it was helpful and important.

“I have been riding for four years, and I have taken the course before,” said Lance Cpl. William H. LeBlanc, a crew chief with Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 161. “This course is awesome for anybody, and it refreshes basic skills. It is definitely not easy for the more experienced riders.”

Because experienced riders can develop bad habits, the course also helps them indentify and correct those habits, explained Greer.

For one student, it was her first time getting on a motorcycle, and she was able to complete the course and pass the skills test.

“I was apprehensive at first, considering that I had never been on a bike before,” said Cpl. Aubry Buzek, a combat correspondent with Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron here.

“The instructors were very patient and understanding and took me through everything step by step.”

The course is offered regularly throughout the month and advanced courses are also offered. For more information, call 858-577-1358.
