Throughout the new year, Marine Corps Community Services will continue construction of new facilities, and the renovation of existing ones, with quality of life as the main objective.

“Our goal is to improve the lives of Marines, sailors and their families,” said Francis M. McComb, director of Marine Corps Community Services.

The first project to be completed for families here will be the Child Youth and Teen Center, which will open with an official ribbon-cutting ceremony Feb. 24.

“The Child Youth and Teen Center will be the first of it’s kind,” said Frank J. Guasti, director of planning and construction at Marine Corps Community Services.

The CYTC will offer child care for infants and toddlers and specialized programs for children of all ages which will comply with the Exceptional Family Member Program.

“We pushed hard to get the programs at Miramar,” said Guasti.

MCCS is also planning the construction of a playground on the east side of Mills Park at the end of February, which will comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

“It is designed for disabled children and children in wheelchairs,” said Guasti.

The biggest project plan for FY10 is an auto service center with a 5,000-square-foot Marine Mart convenience store, car wash and gas station that will offer diesel fuel, propane and wheel and tire service, commented Guasti.

Construction on the service center will begin this summer across from the Marine Corps Exchange.

“We want the center to be easily accessible and energy efficient as well,” said Guasti.

Other MCCS construction plans for 2010 include the renovation of the Officer’s Club ballroom and renovation of the dining area and barber shop at the flight line, costing between $250,000 and $300,000.

With a new youth center, playground, and gas station, along with renovations at the flight line, MCCS will continue to improve the quality of life at Miramar.
